Dry Gin Martini

The King of Cocktails. Winston Churchill famously said a perfect martini involves pouring gin and 'glancing at a bottle of vermouth across the room.' It is the driest, cleanest drink in existence. There is nowhere to hide: the quality of the gin and the temperature are everything.

Ingredients

Equipment Needed

  • Mixing Glass: Never a shaker! Stirring is mandatory.
  • Y-Glass: Must be frozen.

Instructions

1

Fill the mixing glass with ice, add water, stir, then strain out the water.

Tip: This 'ice wash' removes surface meltwater and freezer odors.
2

Pour the gin and vermouth over the ice.

Tip: Keep vermouth in the fridge! It's wine-based and will oxidize if left out.
3

Stir gently but continuously with a bar spoon for 30-45 seconds.

Tip: The goal is extreme cold without excessive dilution. Stirring maintains the oily, viscous texture.
4

Strain into the frozen glass and garnish with an olive.

Tip: The brine of the olive highlights the botanical notes of the gin.

Recipe FAQ

Shaken or Stirred?
James Bond was wrong. Gin should be stirred to maintain its crystal clarity and silky texture. Shaking bruises the gin and clouds the drink with ice shards.
